About ::: sixth generation

::: sixth generation is a gathering place for thoughtful women navigating the second half of life.

From our sixth-generation Southern family homestead, I write about home, legacy, womanhood, faith, and the quiet work of building a meaningful life after life’s inevitable changes.

Whether you’re walking through retirement, grief, an empty nest, divorce, caregiving, spiritual uncertainty, or simply wondering what’s next, this is a place for women who want something deeper than the noise.

Here we believe a meaningful life isn’t built in the spotlight. It’s built at kitchen tables, in garden rows, through hard seasons, and in the slow work of showing up for the people we love.

What You’ll Find Here

01

generations

Writing about faith, womanhood, family, aging, and the seasons that shape us. This section holds reflective essays on what it means to grow, change, and live with intention across the years.

02

the home place

Stories and reflections rooted in rural life, home, memory, and the quiet beauty of ordinary days. This is where you’ll find pieces about place, belonging, and the kind of life that unfolds slowly.

03

after everything

Essays for the seasons that follow loss, change, disappointment, or new beginnings. These pieces hold space for becoming, rebuilding, and learning how to live after life has shifted.

04

daily grace

Faith in real life. A collection of reflections on the small mercies, ordinary blessings, and daily moments where God meets us. These are gentle, encouraging pieces for women trying to live with grace in real life.

05

marginalia

Thoughtful notes from the margins of reading, writing, and living. This space is for literary reflections, half-formed ideas, quotes, observations, and the kind of writing that lives between the lines.

06

letters from home

A cozy letter from the life I’m actually living. What the seasons are teaching me. What I’m noticing, reading, and holding onto. This is the slower, more personal side of the publication—part update, part reflection, part invitation into the ordinary beauty of an unfolding life.

07

in the quiet hours

A monthly series for the questions that linger in the dark and refuse to let us sleep. Each month, I answer one reader question with honesty, care, and a little prayer. These reflections are written for the deep, restless questions we all carry.

08

women of courage

A series exploring the lives of historical women whose faith, strength, brilliance, or sacrifice shaped the world around them. These are the women history should never forget.

This Is a Place For…

Women navigating the second half of life.

Women rebuilding after loss, change, disappointment, retirement, divorce, an empty nest, caregiving, or unexpected new beginnings.

Women who are tired of performance, perfection, and shallow living.

Women who want beauty, honesty, wisdom, faith, and rootedness instead.

Women who are learning that a meaningful life can still be built, even after everything changed.

Whether you’re tending your own patch of land, caring for aging parents, raising the next generation, or simply trying to become more yourself after everything, you’re welcome here.

From the Front Porch

I’m Mary Kaye Chambers, a writer and former teacher living in rural Arkansas. I spent years writing in separate lanes and trying to stick to one niche. ::: sixth generation is where all the pieces finally come together — the practical and the poetic, the everyday and the reflective.

This Substack is my offering — part magazine, part letter from home, part creative companion. Some essays will make you cry. Some will make you laugh. Many will feel like a deep breath you didn’t know you needed.

If that sounds like home to you, I’d be honored if you joined us.
